Before You Surrender, Remember…

There are many people in our area looking for a new pet just like yours. Before considering surrendering your pet to a shelter, see if you can find another family who may be interested in giving your pet a new home.

Below Are a Few Tips to Help You Re-Home Your Pet:

1. Reach out to your community:
  •  Talk to your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers about adopting your pet. Many may be familiar with your pet and willing to open their home and heart. In addition, ask them to get the word out. You never know who may be looking for a new companion.
  • Make flyers to post at places you frequent. Create an attention-grabbing Pet Profile that you can copy/paste on multiple platforms. You can create your own flyer or use this fill-in form: Re-Home Flyer
  • Post on Facebook and share with your post: https://www.facebook.com/
  • Post on Nextdoor: https://nextdoor.com/
  • Request a Courtesy Post from Humane Society of Sedona. We have an amazing following of people on our social media. We offer a courtesy post on our social media for people trying to re-home their pet on their own. There is no cost to you. This will allow you to talk to people that may be looking for a pet like yours. It can be very stressful for some animals to come into a shelter. It is often much easier for animals to transition from one home to another rather than coming into the shelter. A courtesy post provides you with the opportunity to talk to potential adopters and provide them with a deeper understanding of your pet and their individual needs. You are required to provide a current photo and a reliable method of contact for prospective adopters You can submit a request for a Courtesy Post by one of these means:
    • ONLINE: This is the fastest route. You can submit the online Courtesy Post Request below
    • EMAIL: You can download and fill out the Courtesy Post form below then email it along with a photo (required) to: info@humanesocietyofsedona.org

3. Use caution when considering unknown individuals or families as your pet’s new owners.
  • Hold the initial meeting in a public place and ask questions to screen potential adopters. Share your expectations for your pet’s new home. When you find a family that meets your and your pet’s needs, ask for identification and contact information to follow up on how your pet is doing in its new home.
4. Give yourself time to re-home your pet. It can often take weeks or even months to find a new home.
5. Increase your pet’s adoptability. Make sure it’s spayed/neutered, groomed, and up to date on its vaccinations.
6. Check with local rescue groups.
  • Whether you have a dog or cat or an exotic animal, there are many rescue groups in our area who may be able to accept your pet. You can find most of these groups online through a web search or on Facebook.
